Rainforest Costa Rica’s Greatest Treasure
Joyce Kilmer. 1886–1918
TREES
I THINK that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.
A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.
COSTA RICA’S RAINFOREST
“THE RAINFOREST IS A SEA OF TREES” Twenty per cent of Costa Rica’s land mass is protected by national parks or wildlife preserves. Many of these reserves are home to primary rain forests, the largest is Corcovado National Park in southern Pacific Costa Rica and Monteverde Cloud Reserve in northern central Costa Rica. Primary means the trees have never been cut so they grow with up to three meters in their buttress and as tall “as the sky” Only a small amount of sunshine can filter through the tops of the trees and as one descends it gets darker and darker, and life is different at the bottom. Wildlife such as monkeys, sloths, and tropical birds live towards the top of the rainforest trees.
Rain forest are the earth’s oldest living ecosystem, amazing and beautiful. They contain more than one half of the world’s plant and animal species. These forest are found in the hot, humid tropics forming dense jungles and receive a high amount of rainfall each year.
Each year large areas of these precious rain forest are destroyed by deforestation for cattle ranches and for wood products. Climate change is also causing droughts which destroy the forest.
In our daily lives trees offer comfort and relaxation. Sitting under the shade of a large tree gives us a sense of peace-thus relieving stress which is so prevalent in our modern societies.
Trees keep our streets quieter by absorbing noises. And people seem to drive slower.
If each one of us would plant a tree..the world would be greener.
