Rincon de la Vieja Volcano is erupting and the ash is being felt as far northeast as Upaula and Guatuso. This is a big surprise to the near by residents because Rincon has been dormant since 1966.
The Rincon de la Vieja National Park located 45 km from Liberia is a very popular national park for tourists. They come to see the unusual small geysers sprinkled all around the base of the volcano and also the erie hot gurgling “quick sand” . At the base of the volcano is a primary rainforest with well defined trails throughout the park. Many colorful tropical birds can be sighted- This is great for birdwatchers.
What is weather like at Rincon de La Vieja National Park. ?
Rainy season is May through November. But not heavy rains..mostly afternoon thunder showers.
Temperatures are warm-around 75-85 degrees F.
Entrance fee of $10 per person.
Dry season is December through April.
How to get there.? Continue north on Highway 1 past Liberia. Watch for the signs on the right hand side of the road–aprox. six miles north of Liberia. Follow the signs to the park. Several small eco lodges are located at base of the volcano..not far from the entrance to the National park.
