A tourist visa will keep you legally in Costa Rica for 90 days and then you could take a bus to Panama and stay 72 hours and then re enter Costa Rica for another 90 days. The way it works is that when you enter C Rica your passport is stamped for a 90 day legal stay. You could probably go to one of the beach tourist areas and find some kind of work (although it is not legal to work in C Rica unless you have a work permit) As I said Costa Ricans will helpful and show courtesy. Life moves in a much slower pace and there is less pressure on a person.
